Pregnancy and Postpartum Care
Prenatal Physical Therapy is a safe and effective option for reducing pain and dysfunction during and following pregnancy. Due to an increase in hormones, increased weight, and changes in your body’s center of gravity and posture, many women experience pain and other musculoskeletal issues during the prenatal and postpartum period. Physical Therapy during pregnancy and postpartum can help address changes in posture, joint mobility, muscle imbalances, and bony alignment which may develop as a result of these changes.
A physical therapist can evaluate your strength, mobility, posture, pelvic musculature, and movements patterns and create a program to address your specific needs. Treatment can include soft tissue mobilization of the pelvic floor and surrounding musculature, scar mobilization, exercises for core and pelvic floor strengthening and coordination, postural re-education, and education regarding safe activity/exercise. Physical therapy can not only enhance your body’s ability to have a smoother pregnancy and birth, but also allow for a quicker recovery afterwards.
