Dry Needling
Dry needling is an advanced therapeutic technique utilized by physical therapists to manage pain and restore function in musculoskeletal conditions. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling targets myofascial trigger points, or areas of muscle tightness and dysfunction, to relieve pain and improve mobility. During a dry needling session, fine needles are inserted directly into these trigger points of pain.
Dry needling works by causing a micro lesion within the pathological tissue thus breaking up shortened tissues, inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue, normalizing the inflammatory response, and centrally mediating the pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which ultimately reduces pain. This evidence-based approach is often integrated into comprehensive treatment plans alongside other therapeutic modalities, such as manual therapy and exercise, to address a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions effectively.
