Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy
Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy is an innovative rehabilitation technique increasingly utilized by physical therapists to enhance muscle strength and promote recovery, particularly in individuals with musculoskeletal injuries or undergoing post-surgical rehabilitation. During BFR therapy, a specialized tourniquet system is applied to the proximal part of a limb, typically the upper arm or thigh, to partially restrict blood flow. This controlled occlusion creates a lack of oxygen in the working muscles, which stimulates and promotes muscle growth with a smaller load.
With the use of low-intensity strength training paired with BFR, patients can achieve significant gains in muscle strength and muscle growth while minimizing joint stress and discomfort. BFR therapy is beneficial for individuals with limited exercise tolerance, those seeking accelerated rehabilitation or post-operative rehabilitation, making it a valuable addition to traditional physical therapy interventions.
